Bridging the Gap

As technological advances continue in materials and manufacturing processes, the complexity of the design process has eclipsed the expertise of any individual designer. In years past, one designer could consider himself competent in several media, fabricated sheetmetal, stamped components, castings, machined components, and injection molded plastic among others. Today, each method of manufacture has become a design specialty in and of itself. To take advantage of the technology available today, the designer has to be an expert in a particular field of manufacture. OEM's are turning to their suppliers to gain their expertise. However, contract manufactures do not always have the engineering staff needed to support the development of a new product.

Recognizing this void, Plastic Design Corporation was founded in 1991 to create a technology bridge between the OEM and the production molder. This allows the OEM to have the design features and material characteristics designed into their product that will provide the molder with the most manufacturable product.

Taking the conceptual input along with aesthetic and ergonomic considerations, functional and environmental requirements, and regulatory guidelines; Plastic Design Corporation develops a completed product design. This design specifies engineering requirements, manufacturing tolerances, material specifications, tooling approach and secondary operation methods; based on manufacturing volumes and project budget.

Under One Roof: Engineering/Design, Modelmaking, Moldmaking and Engineering Molding

Plastic Design Corporation continues to support the design through manufacturing process by offering in-house model making, prototype moldmaking, and molding. Low volume model replication is provided with Urethane casting. Standardized insert sets and premachined aluminum mold plates are stocked to provide quick turnaround for prototype molds. The molding facility is maintained and organized for FDA approved GMP programs. This level of vertical integration not only provides program continuity, but allows maximum compression of the development cycle.
